KlimaNeuGründer - climate neutral buildings from the period of promoterism - ways, potentials and possibilities of implementation
The focus is on the goal-oriented and economic options, in order to achieve a CO2-neutral energy supply and hermetically sealed building envelope as well as to show high energy efficiency when using. On the other hand building protection regulations and the quality in use are to be considered.

Summary
Starting point / motivation
The objective of the project "Klimaneutrale Gründerzeithäuser - Wege - Potenziale und Um-setzungsmöglichkeiten" is to elaborate a systematic approach for the best possible employment of resources for the redevelopment of old buildings from "Gründerzeit" ("Gründerzeit" is an established term for a certain time period) as these are presented in Vienna or in the other European cities and provincial towns (about one third of all buildings in Vienna dates back to the time before the First World War). The concept should aim at a very efficient and power-saving use of the historic buildings considering their construction-physical qualities as well as the regulations on monument protection and to approach to the already known concept "Passive house".
Contents and goals
The objective of the project at hand is to elaborate a systematic approach for the best possible employment of resources for the redevelopment of old buildings from the period of "Gründerzeit", as there is a huge number existing in Vienna or in many other European cities and provincial towns. The aim is to find ways for a highly efficient and power-saving use of the historic buildings considering their structural-physical qualities as well as the regulations on monument protection and to approach the already well established concept of the "Passive house". Due to the town planning and monument protection regulations the interventions in the historic building substance are allowed only restrictedly. Hence, it has to be claimed, that those buildings ("Gründerzeithäuser") should not be considered as "Passive houses" in the narrow sense, with the relevant parameters for heating and primary power demand. However, in every project case the most possible approach towards the passive house standard shall be aspired. The thermal insulation improvement of old buildings also shows an energy-political requirement, because these constructions represent a considerable portion in whole built volumes and therefore are responsible for an essential portion in the energy consumption as well as in CO2 emissions.
While in case of new buildings energy-saving measures are to be thought already in the design, planning and construction phase, thermal insulation improvement of historic buildings can occur only afterwards. However, this becomes economically complicated in particular by the fact, that the historic facades may not be changed due to the town planning restrictions or monument protection regulations. Hence, the emphasis has to be placed on the inside insulation, which should be additionally treated in a structural-physical way, especially in terms of thermal-bridge-effects (connection of the floor cover and intermediate walls with the building envelope), than on the usually practicable outside thermal insulation or core insulation of the building envelope.
In addition to insulation also other measures must be taken in order to reduce CO2 emissions of Gründerzeit buildings, e.g. installation of efficient building equipment and assessment of the possibilities for the use of renewable.
Methods of treatment and results
All these aspects are taken into consideration and the most efficient rehabilitation concepts are being illustrated via a systematic access in this project: first, for the defined building types and in the next step for concrete objects, which may be assigned to these building types. In order to multiply the results, the capacity of the CO2 reduction is to be determined and exemplified by a demonstration object in the next phase. The realisation of the demonstration object is not any more part of the current project but will be dealt with within a further project.
