Oekoplus-Komplex - Analysis of the energetic and ecologic preconditions for the establishment and utilisation of plus-energy-buildings and building assemblies

The evolution of the low energy house and the passive house standards to the plus energy standard results in a clear reduction of green house gas emissions as well as the primary energy input. The goal of the project is the determination of the technical, ecological and economic basic conditions for the construction and the use of "plus-energy-buildings" in order to finally realize them.

Summary

Starting point / motivation

The construction and the use of buildings cause significant green house gas emissions. The energy consumption and its green house gas emissions could be reduced due to the development of low energy houses and passive houses. The current state-of-the-art aims for a minimum energy input during the operation of the building. But, the reduction of green house gas emissions for the fabrication of the building materials, the construction of the building itself and finally the deconstruction are largely ignored. Even though these emissions can be reduced, they cannot be set to zero. The goal to achieve CO2-neutrality within the housing sector can only be realized if, additionally to the normal use, the building is also used to generate renewable energy. With e.g. photovoltaic solar power plants or wind power green electricity could be generated and fed into the grid. Hence, the share of fossil electricity could be reduced. With this concept it is possible to achieve a green house gas bonus over the life cycle of a building. This new building standard is called "plus-energy-building".

Contents and goals

The goal of the project is the determination of the technical, ecological and economic basic conditions for the construction and the use of "plus-energy-buildings" in order to realize them.

Single homes as well as building assemblies are part of the investigations.

Methods of treatment

In order to achieve the project goals, "system options" will be defined which are then used for the technical, ecological and economic evaluations. The following steps are going to be undertaken:

  • Definition of system variations and determination of energetic and ecologic parameters.
  • Evaluation of technologies to meet the energy demand of the defined systems, and to produce additional green energy.
  • Ecologic and economic evaluation of the systems and technologies.
  • Project management and dissemination of the results.

Expected results / conclusions

The results of the project will show, which technologies and products are suitable for the construction of and use in plus-energy-buildings. Suggestions for the successful realisation of the new building standard are made. Finally, the potential for further technology developments are highlighted. Conclusions about what should be considered concerning the green house gas emissions are going to be drawn. For Austrian suppliers the results of the project represent a main decision tool for the development and market implementation of technically and economically successful plus-energy-buildings. In that sense the project contributes to the strategic goal of Austria to maintain and further expand the market leadership of Austrian companies in the field of housing. The project is going to found the technological basis for the buildings of the future.
