Summary

Starting point / motivation

To enhance the realization of sustainable plus-energy buildings and zero-emission buildings of the future, huge innovation steps concerning buildings evolving from passive energy consumers towards active energy producers have to be taken.

The search for sustainable concepts of energy generation, energy storage and energy transport has become highest priority in many apparently incompatible businesses and sectors, just as in the building industry. Investigations in different industries and sectors which show a strong increase in innovative key technologies prove that high innovative potential goes along with intensive interdisciplinary exchange of know-how between experts as well as with the crosslinking to biomimetics with nature as the inspiration for new ideas.

The challenge to create feasible innovative solutions for a CO2-neutral building sector also implies an interdisciplinary approach and asks for new perspectives within the professional exchange of knowledge and development of technological solutions. This conclusion confirms the necessity of stronger transdisciplinary knowledge exchange and networking in the building industry.

The project therefore aims at establishing a transdisciplinary network comprising different professional fields and focusing specifically on biomimetics to use the high potentials of existing biological solutions for further developments of "plus-energy buildings of the future".

Objectives and methods

Accompanied by systematic networking methods, an interdisciplinary expert exchange process beyond typical expertise borders shall provide new unexpected research intersections and new innovative development topics for buildings of tomorrow. For that purpose, different experts (from scope-related domains within building construction, as well as technology-related domains such as nanomaterials, zoology, botany, environmental science, etc.) will be invited to formulate innovative theses and trends, and to generate ideas for the future within an interactive evaluation process. In expert workshops these topics will be developed to thematic dossiers. Furthermore, depending on the feasibility potential, some of these topics may be elaborated towards concrete R&D proposals or even industrial product concepts.

This - for the building industry - unconventional transdisciplinary expert network model linking many professional and scientific disciplines, various methods and innovative solutions from R&D and biomimetics will be utilized for increasing the innovation strength in the building sector.

Expected results

An interactive web-platform, provided by the BIONIK AUSTRIA network, will be set up for the publication of the results and will enable interactive exchange as well as further expert inputs after completion of the project. This ensures a promising opportunity for many expert fields to gather new perspectives and enlarge the knowledge. This interactive web-portal for exchange of innovative ideas around buildings of tomorrow establishes the basis for possible transdisciplinary project cooperations to support new key technologies for the building industry.
