Evaluation of the room by room temperature differentiation in passive house flats
In 11 flats of the passive house Utendorfgasse cost efficient room by room temperature adjustment controls were installed. The experiences with room by room temperature control should be analysed.

Starting point / motivation
A differentiation of the temperature in particular rooms in passive houses does not make sense currently. This is often criticised by inhabitants and is documented in many sociological studies.
Contents and goals
During this research project the technology for room by room temperature differentiation for passive houses, which is used in 11 flats in the "Building of Tomorrow" - project "passive residential neighbourhood 1140 Vienna Utendorfgasse" should be evaluated by measurement techniques.
Methods of treatment
During this research project the Vienna University of Technology is measuring room temperature, humidity, energy consumption, time response and so on in flats with and without room by room temperature differentiation and then will compare them.
In the case of Utendorfgasse it was for the first time, that a temperature differentiation for a decrease of the temperature in the bedrooms had been achieved at competitive prices. First interviews of the tenants show that they are enthusiastic about the installed room by room temperature differentiation possibility.
This solution was installed in 11 flats of the passive residential neighbourhood Utendorfgasse in 2006 and is in use since the move-in in November 2006. In 2008 the interviews and the evaluation in the passive house took place. In winter 2008/2009 flats with and without room by room temperature differentiation were measured. Furthermore, the calculated impact on the heat consumption will be evaluated and the findings will be analysed.
Expected results / conclusions
The following exemplary questions should be answered by this research project:
- Is the room by room control used by the inhabitants and how?
- How much energy is saved because of cooler bedrooms?
