Certified passive attic conversion of a typical building from the period around 1900

Conversion of an attic of a typical building from the period about 1900 to a passive attic with photovoltaic system and renovation of the existing building equipment. The aim is to keep the additional construction costs under 10 %, to avoid overheating in summer and to make possible a reproduction for the large amount of buildings from the same period.

Summary

Starting point / motivation

Many inhabitants of attic conversions complain about overheating in summer. That is often the reason for the installation of more and more air conditioning units.

Contents and goals

This demonstration project consists of two attics, one overlooking the street, the other facing the court. There will be four flats in the attic of typical building from the period around 1900.

The aim is:

  • to develop solutions to keep the additional construction costs under 10 %, despite the great size of the roof area,
  • to show, that it is possible to achieve comfort especially in summer in attic conversions with only litte additional costs,
  • to give an example for multiplication and to set a standard for attic conversions.

Methods of treatment

There will be photovoltaic pannels in combination with shading elements installed on the roof. A focus will be the usage of ecological materials like wood, mineral wool and so on. In the area of the terrace vacuum insulation will be used to allow barrier-free building.

During the reconstruction the lead pipes will be changed as a benefit for the inhabitants and the unattractive 1 m per 1m big areaway will be closed. So, the sustainable renovation of the building equipment, in this case of the toilet ventilations, will be possible.

Because of the same typology of the buildings from the period around 1900 it is easy to reproduce the project.

Expected results / conclusions

It will be shown that the passive house standard works also with attic conversions.
