BIGMODERN - Subproject 9: Demonstration project University Innsbruck, Faculty for Construction Engineering - Implementation

The demonstration project University Innsbruck, building of the faculty for construction engineering is part of the flagship project BIGMODERN. The demonstration project shows that in major renovation projects high energy and sustainability performance can be achieved using economically viable solutions.

Kurzbeschreibung

This project is a sub project of the flagship project "BIGMODERN - Sustainable modernisation standards for buildings owned by the Federal Republic of Austria of the period from the 1950s to the 1980s"

Summary

Starting point/Motivation

This project is a sub project of the flagship project "BIGMODERN – Sustainable modernisation standards for buildings owned by the Federal Republic of Austria of the period from the 1950s to the 1980s"

In the frame of this subproject being part of the flagship project BIGMODERN, the realized measures in one of the demoprojects (university building “Universität Innsbruck – Bauingenieurfakultät”) are documented.

To reach the aim of sustainable refurbish-standards in practice, there have to be bigger changes in different technologies. Innovative technologies in the context of modernization mean additional efforts in planning and coordination, which are hardly possible in the standard planning process. Changes in the standard planning process and in the used technologies imply risks for the building owner like exploding costs, less saving than planned in operation and susceptibility to failure. To get innovations into modernization-standards, these risks have to be minimized.

The core element of the flagship project is the implementation of two demonstration projects, which should be modernized especially for the BIG according to above-average quality standards concerning energy efficiency and sustainability while complying with an industrial management point of view. This is supposed to raise the BIG’s awareness of breaking new grounds in order to maintain innovative and yet cost-effective renovations.

The aim is to set new standards in conventional renovation and to tap the BIG’s full potential concerning implementations.

Contents and Objectives

The project was implemented under the lead project BIGMODERN. Details about the contents and goals of the flagship project and the previous sub-projects can be found in the final reports of these parts of the project.
The final report on subproject 9 documents the measures implemented at the University of Innsbruck demonstration project.
The objective of the subproject is to show the changes compared to the planning of the demonstration project University of Innsbruck and to document the actual implementation of innovations and insights.

Results

This project represents a further step in the implementation of outstanding energy projects. In upcoming renovations of the ARE/BIG the objectives of BIGMODERN will be further supported and optimized on the basis of experiences in the demonstration project. Despite difficulties and challenges the converted project represents a shining example of energetic standards in modernisations.

The main innovations and results of the implemented demonstration project are:

  • High reduction of primary energy demand (- 75%) and CO2 emissions (- 80%)
  • The newly developed facade (wood-aluminum facade element), which was mounted at the same time on a rail system from two sides of the building
  • The innovative windows with 4 glasses, weather-protected shading-system and automatic control (radiation-dependent, manual override)
  • The innovative ventilation concept with automatic night ventilation and comfort ventilation of the offices. Combination of free ventilation and mechanical ventilation
  • Newly designed, transparent overflow over the office doors with very good acoustic characteristics
  • Innovative control concept (DDC Automation System) for the individual control of the shading system, ventilation and windows incl. night ventilation
  • Installation of "light traps" (transparent areas for lighting the core areas of the building) and transparent fields above the doors;
  • Free cooling with ground water; 100% cooling energy via free cooling

The combination of several innovative components in a renovation project is still a challenging process and the integration of an integrated planning into complex planning processes is still difficult.

It is not only important to implement the overall control of the integral planning process, but also to control the commissioning and operation of the plant in the first phase after implementation. It showed that despite very good and integral planning, weaknesses and errors can occur during operation of the plants, which remain undetected in the absence of operation-management responsibility and therefore the savings targets can be missed.
