Issues and context

High-performance insulating plaster systems represent an important option for improving the thermal insulation of historic buildings without changing their physical appearance. The high-performance aerogel insulation plaster has recently become available for deployment. In this context, the present project will explore final stucco systems with structured surfaces suitable for building. The project will address both technical requirements (strength, durability, moisture behaviour, ) and architectural considerations (visual effect, texture, feel, colour, aging, need for reinforcement mesh). The project partners will take the next step in developing a complete system in close collaboration with the Austrian Federal Office of Monuments and the Urban Design Department of the City of Vienna (MA 19).

Targets and methods

Required developmental work shall be conducted with:

  • Test surfaces in the Röfix company laboratory
  • Test areas at the Vienna University of Technology and
  • 3 "real" test facades on selected (historical) buildings (e.g. in Vienna, Salzburg, Carinthia, possibly public administration buildings) The demonstration facades will be observed and evaluated.

  • Comparison of grain, texture, and colour of the final stucco systems
  • Use and definition of purpose
  • Experience and guidelines for craftsmanship
  • Measurement of results and experience of the mechanical and thermal stress resistance of the final-coating stucco systems
  • Test results for hydro-thermal behaviour
  • Assessment of the application potential depending on the system price
  • Architectural / historic preservation assessments
  • Creation of reference surfaces
