Historical buildings of tomorrow - sub project 5: Documentation and monitoring
The main aim is the documentation and monitoring of the demonstration projects within the scope of the project "Historical buildings of tomorrow" with regard to the technical implementation, investment and operation costs and to the energetic performance. All demonstration projects will be accompanied by an evaluation process regarding occupants' satisfaction and the refurbishment process. Beyond that, legal constraints for innovative refurbishment of historical buildings will be documented and proposals for adaptations of the rental law and refurbishment subsidy schemes will be developed.

Goal of the project is to develop a monitoring tool that allows to predict the expectable (final) quality of the residential buildings based on decisions made during the planning and construction phase. For this purpose, the current certification tool for the determination of "TQB-points" will be equipped with "interim" certifications, which shall allow the land developer to carry out a quality monitoring parallel to the construction phase. The tool will be tested with the data obtained from selected construction projects during the first residential development phase in seestadt aspern.

In course of the refurbishment of the Vienna University of Technology (Univercity 2015) Austria´s biggest plus energy office building is going to be built. This project intends to demonstrate not only the technical but furthermore the economical feasibility of plus energy office buildings. Within this building the plus energy concept is fulfilled by optimizing the power consumption of the whole building and the installation of Austria´s largest facade integrated photovoltaic plant.

Ventilation systems for dwellings can be more efficient in terms of cost and energy, if the air guiding concept with cascade principle (overflow of air from sleeping rooms into living room). In this project, the planning principles are developed and published in practice guidelines.

Development of a cost-benefit-tool which reaches beyond a pure cost approach and also recognizes the benefits of a building for its inhabitants and users. The inclusion of benefits is based on existing evaluation systems, especially on the Austrian building evaluation system TQB - Total Quality Building, which has been revised in 2009.

Redevelopment of a residential complex from the 1970s to passive house quality while using renewable energy. Residential buildings of the post-war period are currently due for redevelopment. Apart from wear and tear, wasted energy and no longer contemporary fixtures, these buildings also suffer from a lack of architectural appeal. This particular project presents a holistic redevelopment concept as the best solution in passive house quality.
Refurbishment of an existing villa of the "Gründerzeit" to passive house standard with passive and active solar use
The project shows in an exemplary way how buildings of the time of "Gründerzeit" could be maintained and could offer a better environmental balance including the view of the village and the traffic than a new building. As an example a villa has been converted into a multi-family house within a larger housing project.

The project BauModern turned to non-profit and commercial housing developers and real estate managements. Building with recycros is working out basics in order to close the cycle of materials in the building sector as well as to increase the usage of recycled materials (recycros). The existing material cycles in the building sector are going to be analysed. Furthermore, there will be a catalogue presented, covering the actual situation of which materials are used in today´s engineering and how the waste is treated. The project will be completed with a summary of results and a proposal of concrete materials and constructional systems for the building project gugler.

Refurbishment of single- and two-familiy houses in timber construction in Austria has a large CO2-saving potential. To meet the special requirements for the refurbishment of timber constructions, a concept for the renovation to passive house respectively plus-energy house standard with special focus on ecologic construction materials was developed in this project.

Under the basic principle GIPV as "energy source balcony" this project should help covering a part of the electricity needs from renewable energy. By integrating the already preassembled PV elements into the balcony construction, the elements for the final assembly range up to 4 meters. The aim is to win besides private persons also particularly the gastronomy, especially the hotel sector (in tourist regions) as well as the housing sector (e.g. via architects) as customers.
Pallets never pall - the Pallet House
The winning project "Pallet House" of the EU-wide competition GAU:DI in 2007 consists of 800 (used) pallets. It has been exhibited in a scale 1:1 at the Biennale in Venice 2008 and is going to be developed for series production. Therefore, two exemplary scenarios are planned: (temporary) construction at the former airfield in Aspern, Vienna and the construction of a low-cost building in South Africa.
