Pallets never pall - the Pallet House
The winning project "Pallet House" of the EU-wide competition GAU:DI in 2007 consists of 800 (used) pallets. It has been exhibited in a scale 1:1 at the Biennale in Venice 2008 and is going to be developed for series production. Therefore, two exemplary scenarios are planned: (temporary) construction at the former airfield in Aspern, Vienna and the construction of a low-cost building in South Africa.
Titel und Synopse
Alles Palette - Das Palettenhaus

Summary
Starting point / motivation
This simple house constructed from used pallets was developed by Gregor Pils and Claus Schnetzer with the aim of temporary use in various fields. Thus 800 used palettes are conducted to a second phase of utilization. They can be joined to modules for quickly building a house. The multi-layer construction offers enough interior space for installations, insulation and lighting.
The pallet house is ecological, energy-efficient and cheap and can be reconstructed later in other locations with little expenditure.
Contents and goals
Within the scope of this research project it will be possible to develop it further in detail and to prepare it for mass production. A posterior use, e.g., for social purposes could easily be realized. The pallets house is designed to be prefabricated, to be multiplied and to be grouped into ensembles with a village character.
Pallets all-over at the lake of Aspern (Lake town on the former airfield in Aspern)
A competition was carried out for the design of a master plan which is planned now by a developing society in cooperation with the town of Vienna. However, the time frame planned is extended so far that a use of parts of the area that is limited in time seems to be feasible.
Within the scope of this project a proposal for the temporary use of parts of the airfield at Aspern during the construction phases will be developed. This proposal is focussed, on the one hand, very specifically on the needs of the neighbours and the population of the district, as well as generate - if possible - synergy effects with the offers for leisure activities of the town of Vienna. For the development of this proposal the available know-how of the Vienna University of Technology in the areas of town sociology (Prof. Dangschat) and energy efficiency (Sustainable Building and Design Group) should be used. In this way the construction of the lake town and the changes linked with it can be efficiently prepared.
The following project issues are conceivable: Information center for the project (exhibition, film, cafè), show room for building products, location / base for leisure activities (sports, games, culture), urbane farm ("self harvest")
The development agency Wien 3420 is most interested in offering flexible room for the function "Stadtteilmanagement".
Pallets all-over in South Africa (Ithuba Skills College)
In a very poor township southeast of Johannesburg, on an area of 22,000 m², the Ithuba Skills college will be established. Ithuba Skills college was founded by Christoph Chorherr. In Ithuba college "classical" knowledge is transmitted in a five-year education (from school step 8) like English, mathematics, natural sciences, as well as additional ones.
Pallet house as a residential building in the Ithuba Skills college.
The pallet house is to serve as a prototype for a residential building in Johannesburg which can be multiplied by the local population in the future. The pallet house should be built from local materials at low cost (according to the motto " less is more ").
Expected results / conclusions
Our aim is to develop a building which is perfectly adapted to the local situation concerning building materials, climatic boundary conditions and financial possibilities. The construction process should be simplified that far that building with the simplest means gets possible. Following the motto "build together, learn together" the local population should be integrated in the construction process.
